ដោយសារមើលឃើញព័ត៌មានតាមបណ្តាញសង្គម ក្មេងប្រុសដែលត្រូវជាកូនបង្កើតរបស់អ្នកជំងឺ បានទូរស័ព្ទមកអង្គការធីភីអូកម្ពុជា ដើម្បីស្នើសុំការព្យាបាលដល់ឪពុករបស់ខ្លួនដែលមានជំងឺផ្លូវចិត្តធ្ងន់ធ្ងរ ហើយត្រូវបានចងបង្ខាំងចោលជាយូរឆ្នាំមកហើយ។ នៅពេលក្រុមការងារចុះទៅដល់ អ្នកជំងឺត្រូវបានចងបង្ខាំងនៅដីចុងភូមិ ក្បែរព្រៃស៊ុបទ្រុប។ រោងខ្ទមមួយនៅក្រោមដើមដូង មានថង់ផ្លាស្ទិកពណ៌សតូចមួយគ្របពីលើ ហើយមានអង្រឹងមួយចងពីគល់ដូងទៅបង្គោលឈើមួយ។

បន្ទាប់ពីបានទទួលការព្យាបាលពីអង្គការធីភីអូកម្ពុជា ភាពប្រសើរហាក់យឺតមែនទែន តែអ្នកមើលថែគាត់ដែលជាភរិយានៅតែតស៊ូ ព្យាយាមផ្តល់ថ្នាំឱ្យយ៉ាងទៀងទាត់។ បន្ទាប់ពីព្យាបាល បានរយៈពេល ១៥ខែ ក្រុមគ្រួសារសង្កេតឃើញថា អ្នកជំងឺមានភាពល្អប្រសើរច្រើន អាចនិយាយយល់គ្នាបាន គេងលក់ល្អប្រសើរ។ អ្នកជំងឺបានស្នើសុំ ដោះច្រវ៉ាក់គាត់។ បន្ទាប់ពីដោះច្រវ៉ាក់ អ្នកជំងឺមានអាការៈកាន់តែល្អប្រសើរឡើង គាត់ចេះរៀបចំខ្លួនឯងបាន និងមានការប្រាស្រ័យទាក់ទងជាមួយអ្នកជិតខាងបានធម្មតា។ ញាតិមិត្តក្នុងភូមិពិតជាភ្ញាក់ផ្អើល ហើយសម្តែងក្តីត្រេកអរ ជាមួយអ្នកជំងឺ និងសាច់ញាតិ។ ភរិយារបស់គាត់និយាយថា «ខ្ញុំមិនដែលមានសង្ឃឹមទេ ខ្ញុំមិននឹកស្មានថា ប្តីរបស់ខ្ញុំបានធូរស្បើយនោះឡើយ»។
The family’s focal person becomes greater burden
After getting an information on social media about operation unchain project, the young man who is the patient's son, contacted TPO Cambodia for requesting treatment for his father, who has a serious mental illness and had been chained for many years. When the team arrived at his home, the patient was locked up on the left behind of the house and there were a lot of trees around. A poor cottage built under a coconut tree, covered with a small white plastic bag, and a hammock tied from the trunk of the coconut tree to a wooden pole. A man with a bushy beard sits on a hammock, relaxed, wearing a safety helmet. When looking closely, the chain is almost bigger than the one used to tie an elephant. And the chain is stuck in a coconut tree, indicating that he was tied here by his relatives for many years until the chain sank into the coconut tree. He is a former commune clerk.
When asked by an assessment team, he didn't have insight to answer the questions and sat quietly, not communicating with our team. According to his wife, her husband began to act strangely, losing his sense of responsibility, talking alone, not sleeping, and stealing other people's belongings walking out aimlessly, talking and singing alone, causing harm, destroying property, burning houses and even violence. At first, he had been treated by four traditional healers, but he did not get better. He was also referred to both public and private hospitals but did not see any improvement. Since the family is poor and can’t afford to pay for his treatment, they decided to chain him painfully for safety with feeling hopeless for a recovery. His wife said that “when the focal person of the family becomes ill like this, what do I and my children have to rely on?” In addition, his illness is an additional burden because she cannot go anywhere for earnings and requires her to stay home to take care of him regularly, especially the food.
After receiving treatment from TPO Cambodia, his improvement seemed to be very slow, but his caregiver, his wife, tried her best to take care of him and ensure he takes medicine regularly. After 15 months of treatment, the family noticed that the patient was much better, able to communicate and sleep better. The patient asked his parents to free him from chain. After he was unchained, the patient's condition was further improved, he was able to take care of himself and communicate normally with his neighbors. People in the village were surprised and expressed their joy with the patient and his family. His wife said, "I do feel hopeless, I never thought my husband would recover."
